Comparison of solar activity proxies: eigenvectors versus averaged sunspot numbers

چکیده
ABSTRACT We explore the links between averaged sunspot numbers (SSN) and a modulus summary curve (MSC) of two largest eigenvectors solar background magnetic field (SBMF) derived from principal component analysis. MSC has rather close correspondence with whole set SSN revealing cycle timings, duration, maxima times for cycles 12–24, 6, 7, −4, −3, while few in mid-18th mid-19th centuries there are discrepancies maximum amplitudes, durations, maxima. Possible reasons these related to uncertainties observations 18th–19th centuries, definition different activity entities they represent: toroidal poloidal fields, discussed. Wavelet Fourier spectral analysis series reveal within 95 per cent confidence levels same prominent period 10.7 yr, whereas show 101 yr 342 or above red-noise level. The correlation coefficients vary 0.25 data (from 1700), 0.56 sets 1860, 0.67 1900 when all restorations agree. These confirmed be closely but not identically representing dynamo. Use SBMF can provide additional information better understanding activity.

Waldmeier [1971] found a very tight relationship between the F10.7 solar radio flux and the sunspot number and suggested using the flux for an objective calibration of the sunspot number. He suggested that if this relationship changed later on, the sunspot number should be recalibrated, assuming that the calibration must have drifted with time. I repeat his analysis using data up to the present...
متن کاملBHP universality in sunspot numbers fluctuations
We analyze the famous Wolf’s sunspot numbers. The time series shows a mean period with duration of 133 months. We observed that the mean period consists of two equal sized phases, descendent and ascendent, that can be well fitted by two ortogonal lines. The sunspot numbers standard deviation period is well fitted by a sine function. We discovered that the distribution of the sunspot number fluc...
متن کاملForecasting Sunspot Numbers with Neural Networks
This paper presents a feedforward neural network approach to sunspot forecasting. The sunspot series were analyzed with feedforward neural networks, formalized based on statistical models. The statistical models were used as comparison models along with recurrent neural networks. The feedforward networks had 24 inputs (depending on the number of predictor variables), one hidden layer with 20 ...
متن کاملSolar flares in the recent sunspot maximum
At the time of writing (October, 2005) we have almost completed the fourth solar maximum of the space age, during which we have had nearly continuous study of solar activity from above the Earth’s atmosphere. During the most recent part of this era the progress of technology has enabled new observations with unprecedented scope. As a result we have learned many new and important things about so...
